🧠 Route Concepts & Coverage Beaters

Use this guide to understand why certain plays work against specific defenses.

1. Coverage Beaters (The “Rock, Paper, Scissors” of Passing) 👊✋✌️

Quick answers for what each shell gives up, where the void lives, and which concept punishes it.

Coverage table
If the Defense Plays... Their Weakness 📉 The “Killer” Routes/Concepts 🚀 Why it works / Where to throw
Cover 0 (Zero Blitz)No deep help; 1-on-1 everywhere.Go/Fade, Slant, Zig, ScreenThrow deep immediately or hit a slant/screen hot.
Cover 1 (Man Free)1 Safety deep; Man underneath.Mesh, Drag, Slant, Double MovesCrossing routes rub defenders off; double moves win vs man.
Cover 2 (Zone)Deep sidelines (Honey hole); Middle deep.Smash (Corner), Fade (sideline), PostThrow the corner route over the flat defender, or the post between safeties.
Cover 3 (Zone)Seams (Hashes); Flats.4 Verts (Seams), Curl-Flat, FloodThrow the seams between the deep 3rd defenders; or hit the flat quickly.
Cover 4 (Quarters)Underneath; Intermediate middle.Digs, Curls, Stick, Draw RunSafeties bail deep fast; tons of space for 10-yard stop routes.
Cover 6 (Quarter-Quarter-Half)Weak side flat; Deep middle.Flood (field side), Post-DigAttack the Cover 2 side with Smash; attack the Cover 4 side with Digs.

2. Route Concepts by “Purpose” 🎯

Grouped the same way you think on game day: man beaters, zone beaters, and blitz beaters.

Organized by purpose

Man Beaters (Vs Tight Coverage)

Requires WRs with good Release (REL) and Short Route Running (SRR).

  1. Zig / Whip: The ultimate man-beater. Fakes in, breaks out. DBs get lost.
  2. Drag / Shallow Cross: fast run across the field. Speed wins.
  3. Texas (RB Angle): RB fakes flat, cuts sharply inside. LBs can't cover this.
  4. Slant: Quick inside leverage win.

Zone Beaters (Vs Soft Coverage)

Requires patience and finding the “window.”

  1. Flood: 3 routes to one sideline (Deep, Intermediate, Short). Overloads the zone.
  2. Spot / Snag: Triangle concept (Corner, Flat, Spot). Stretches defense horizontally.
  3. Mesh: Two shallow crossers sit down in holes vs zone (or keep running vs man).
  4. Curl-Flat: Pushes DBs back with the deep threat, hits the curl in the void.

Blitz Beaters (Hot Reads)

When they send the house, throw these NOW.

  1. Slant: Standard hot route. One step, throw.
  2. Bubble Screen: Get the ball to the edge before pressure arrives.
  3. Pop Pass (TE): Fake run, pop the ball to TE over the blitzing LBs.
  4. Hitch: 3-step drop, ball out.

3. Audibles Blueprint (What to set in your “Custom Audibles”) 🗣️

Every playbook lets you set 4-5 audibles. Don’t be random. Build a toolbelt.

Audible plan
Audible SlotRecommended CallPurpose (When to call it)
Run (Inside)Inside Zone / DiveCall vs Light Box (High Safeties, Spread DL).
Pass (Quick)Stick / SlantsCall vs Blitz or Soft Off-Coverage.
Pass (Deep)Verts / PA ShotCall vs Press Man (if WR is fast) or Safety creeping down.
Cover BeaterFlood / SmashCall vs Cover 3 / Cover 2 Zone shells.
ScreenBubble / HB ScreenCall vs Aggressive Pass Rush to slow them down.

4. Reading the Defense 101 (Pre-Snap) 👀

Three quick checkpoints before the ball is snapped.

Pre-snap reads

1. Check the Safeties:

  • 1 High Safety: Likely Cover 1 (Man) or Cover 3 (Zone). -> Think Seams, Crossers.
  • 2 High Safeties: Likely Cover 2, Cover 4, or Man-Under. -> Think Run, Middle of Field.

2. Check the Corners:

  • Pressing (Close): Likely Man or Cover 2 Hard Flat. -> Fade/Go if fast; Drag/Mesh if slow.
  • Off (Back 5+ yds): Likely Cover 3 or Cover 4. -> Quick Hitch, Screen, Out route.

3. Check the “Box” (LBs + DL):

  • 5 or fewer: Run the ball! (Light box).
  • 7 or more: Pass! (Stacked box).
